P19-Saint George, Windsor

Price: £4.00

This badge was most probably associated with the cult of Saint George at Windsor, where the heart of the saint was kept. Around the border of the badge is the Latin invocation SCE GEORGE ORA PRO NOBIS (Saint George pray for us). Saint George was born around the year 280 AD in Cappadocia  (Modern Turkey). He became a cavalry officer in the Roman army, and despite having been a favourite of the Emperor Diocletian, he was executed for his Christian faith. His legend was an inspiration for the Crusaders; this being enforced at the battle of Antioch when he reputedly appeared in the sky with a host of white clad horsemen. The popular legend of the slaying of the dragon was emblematic of the triumph of good over evil. By the early 15th century he had replaced Saint Edward the Confessor and Saint Edmund as patron saint of England.

Original found in London.
