R7-Porringer

Porringers were used for everyday eating of soft foods such as soups, stews and porridges. The first reference to their use is found in the London pewterers’ ordinances of 1348. Early references to porringers can also be found in late 15th century wills, and although no examples dated to this period survive we can assume that they were similar to later styles.

A number of examples from the mid 16th century survive, including the piece from which our replica is copied. Based on the evidence of wills, porringers seem to have been popular items at the time. Nineteen were recorded in the ownership of one individual in 1476, while four other wills dating to the early 16th century include a total of 36 items.

Their use seems to have continued into the 17th century, with the latest datable examples coming from the wreck of the ‘Utrecht’, which sank in 1648.

Mid 16th century.

Diameter of bowl 170mm; 234mm across 'ears'.
